A brief guide to Madagascar

Map of international airports in or near Madagascar

Madagascar is the country that occupies the island of Madagascar off the African coast in the Indian Ocean. The island is very large; in fact only three islands on Earth are larger.

The capital of Madagascar is Antananarivo, known locally as Tana. There is not much for tourists to see in Tana but that can be appealing if you are looking to get away from it all. The Queen’s Palace, Rova, is an ancient ruin in the city but was a victim to arson several years ago and all that is left standing is the outer stone wall. Tana does make a good base from which to tour the country.

Madagascar is famous for its Lemurs. A visit to Masoala National Park will allow you to see the frisky creatures. The National Reserve gives you many wonderful photo opportunities that will capture your memories.

Navigating Madagasgar is best done by Taxi Brousse or the larger Taxi Be. Taxi Brousse travels the entire country. Taxi Be follows many of the same courses and is cheaper because you are usually sharing the taxi with others.

For a once in a lifetime adventure you can enter Madagascar by yacht. Book a bareboat and you will be roughing it. You will have a crew and guide but will need to catch your own fish for food. If you enjoy boating and fishing this is a real treat. You can also book a catamaran which can be compared to a drifting resort. Yacht Gecko is a reputable company booking yacht tours that include scuba diving, fishing, snorkeling, and exploration of isolated islands.

You can eat on the cheap in Madagascar. Hotely is the national staple and is made of rice and laoka, a side dish like meat or beans. Fresh fruit and rice cakes can be found at kiosks throughout the villages. Colas are widely available. Madagascar produces a local cola, Bon Bon Anglais, which tastes like bubble gum. The local beer is Three Horses Beer and there are many flavors of home-produced rum available.

You will arrive at the Ivato Airport in Tana, the capital. Arriving here is much different than arriving in the West. You will need to buy a visa with Euros or dollars, Once you have claimed your baggage you will be approached by "entrepreneurs" offering help with your baggage, expecting a tip. Be patient and remember you are on vacation and all will go smoothly.
